Troubling increase in Glyphosate use uncovered in Medway

NC
9 Dec 2025

Excessive use of herbicides remains a serious concern for both human and animal health. Five years ago, Medway Council committed to stopping use of glyphosate-based herbicides in our green spaces.

It is therefore deeply troubling to note a more than 400% increase in glyphosate use within the Highways Department during 2024, alongside a rise in the use of other herbicides across parks and greenspaces.

Medway Liberal Democrats have formally written to the Council’s portfolio holder to seek clarity on this matter. We are pressing for answers on why this surge has occurred and for a clear strategy to bring an end to dependence on glyphosate.

We remain committed to keeping residents informed and will continue to advocate for safer, healthier, and more sustainable management of Medway’s public spaces.
