In Praise of Allotments: A Review

From wartime “Dig for Victory” plots to today’s thriving growing communities, allotments have long nourished both people and places. Medway Liberal Democrats' very own professional gardener Stuart Bourne celebrated their remarkable history and lasting benefits - from improving health and wellbeing to bringing neighbours together and providing vital habitats for wildlife.

But in Medway, demand is far outstripping supply. With just over 1,300 plots and a waiting list of 2,171 people in 2025, some residents face waits of five to ten years. The message was clear: Medway urgently needs more space to grow. Stuart suggested how the Council could develop more allotment space; creating new developments, including private sites and better use of available open park land.

The evening sparked plenty of discussion, accompanied by Lynn’s usual fabulous cakes and a raffle. During the Q&A, a local resident shared memories of his father’s award-winning allotment, bringing along his competition cup and photographs, serving as a wonderful personal reminder of the pride, skill and community spirit that allotments inspire.
