Cycling Infrastructure: Veloplanner Data Shows Medway Falling Behind Europe say local Lib Dems

Medway Liberal Democrats have responded to new Veloplanner analysis comparing cycling infrastructure across Europe — data that places Medway near the bottom of the rankings for safe, continuous, and accessible cycling routes.

Across major European cities and regions, Veloplanner highlights extensive protected cycle lanes, integrated networks, and long‑term investment strategies.

In contrast, Medway’s fragmented routes, missing links, and lack of protected corridors mean the area performs poorly when measured against European standards for safety, connectivity, and commuter viability.

Medway Liberal Democrats have already raised these concerns in their submission to the Local Plan consultation, calling for a coherent, modern cycling network that supports active travel, reduces congestion, and improves public health.

John Castle, on behalf of Medway Liberal Democrats, said:“Veloplanner’s findings confirm what cyclists in Medway experience every day — our cycling infrastructure simply does not measure up. While European towns and cities are building safe, connected networks that encourage people to cycle, Medway continues to rely on disjointed paths and unsafe road sharing.

We have repeatedly urged the Council to prioritise cycling infrastructure in the Local Plan. This isn’t just about cyclists — it’s about cleaner air, healthier communities, and giving residents real transport choices. Medway deserves better, and the Council must act.”

Medway Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign for a comprehensive cycling strategy, including protected lanes, improved signage, safe junctions, and investment in active travel corridors linking key communities across the towns.
